What if the kid just refuses? Pacifiers and SIDS

Mounting evidence indicates that infants that take pacifiers are less likely to die from SIDS. No one really knows why. My hunch is that there may be some way in which the pacifier prevents suffocation (the major cause of non-genetic SIDS).

We tried and tried and tried and tried to get the kid to take one but he consistently and vehemently refused.

hope #2 takes one.

We have a 4 month old who refuses the pacifier as well. Any tips on how to get her to use one would be greatly appreciated. She will suck her thumb so maybe that will serve the same purpose as the pacifier with respect to preventing suffocation. Good luck with #2.

My 4 month old son won't entertain them, whereas we are still struggling to get my three year old to give them up.

We call the dummies over here in the UK by the way, not that that really has any relevance at all but these language differences always interest me.

I will be a mom soon. What's the deal with pacifiers? Other than the SIDS connection, why is it so important for a baby to suck on a pacifier? Thanks.
